Canon R5 Memory Cards

Welcome to our Canon R5 Memory Card Guide with actual in-camera speed and buffer tests of 47 CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SDXC cards. 

By analyzing how long each card takes to clear the R5's buffer we can more confidently guide you on which cards are best suited to your needs and budget. 

When shooting RAW (46.1MB) + JPEG L (16.1MB) at 20 fps the Canon R5 will write to the fastest CFexpress Type-B cards at up to approximately 520MB/s.

Therefore, because many of the cards tested here can comfortably handle these speeds you won't see a noticeable difference in buffer clearing times between premium cards such as the Lexar Diamond or Delkin Black and midrange cards like the Lexar Gold or Delkin Power.

However, some premium cards such as the Delkin Black Series offer better warranties, tougher build quality and increased reliability which are also important purchasing factors.

In fact, Delkin are the only company to offer a 48-hour replacement guarantee for their Black Series along with US and European support teams. 

R5 Supported Memory Cards

The Canon EOS R5 features two memory cards slots. Slot 1 supports CFexpress Type B Memory Cards whilst Slot 2 supports SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards.

The theoretical maximum speed of each card type is:

  • CFexpress Type-B: Up to 2 GB/s (CFe 2.0) & up to 4 GB/s (CFe 4.0)
  • UHS-II: Up to 312 MB/s
  • UHS-I: Up to 104 MB/s

However, you are unlikely to see these maximum speeds in-camera even with the fastest cards due to camera limitations. 

The R5 supports the CFexpress 2.0 standard but not the latest 4.0 standard. However you can still use CFexpress 4.0 cards because they are backwards compatible, you just won't see any advantages in-camera. Where you will see an advantage is when copying files from your memory card to your computer, with a 4.0 card this can be up to twice as fast compared to a 2.0 card providing you are using a CFexpress 4.0 compatible reader.

Canon R5 CFexpress Type B Speed & Buffer Tests

For shooting sports, birds in flight or any other fast action which requires continuous bursts CFexpress Type B memory cards will clear the buffer much faster than SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II / UHS-I cards.

For all of our tests we use the Electronic Shutter in Hi+ (20 FPS) and manual focus with ISO set to 100 and a minimum shutter speed of 1/250th which is sufficient to achieve 20 FPS with the R5. For HEIF files the FPS is limited to 12 FPS. High ISO noise reduction is set to standard and we always shoot the same scene for consistency with the file sizes.

Please note that the maximum number of shots before the buffer is full can decrease as ISO rises due to the added noise making the file sizes larger.

Also please note that sometimes the same card will have different read and write speeds depending on the capacity of the card, therefore these results are only valid for the sizes that we have tested here.

Canon R5 SDXC UHS-II Speed & Buffer Tests

Memory card slot 2 of the R5 supports SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II and UHS-I) memory cards.

For clarity on the capacity: SD cards go up to 2GB. SDHC (High Capacity) range from 4GB to 32GB and SDXC (Extended Capacity) cards go from 64GB up to 2TB.

For clarification on the speed: UHS-I cards max out at 104 MB/s and UHS-II cards that feature a second row of pins max out at up to 312 MB/s.

Since the R5 produces some pretty large file sizes from its 45 megapixel sensor we have only tested the faster UHS-II cards. We wouldn't recommend restricting the R5 by using UHS-I cards.

These tests were carried out using the Electronic Shutter in Hi+ (20 FPS) mode.

This card performs very poorly in the R5 and has done in all of the R Series cameras that we have tested it in. We have tried multiple cards but the problem persists. It's even slower than the Angelbird V60 UHS-II card.

Recording to Multiple Cards

When utilizing the option “Rec. to Multiple” the same image type will be written to the cards in both slot 1 and slot 2.

Unfortunately with this setup the write speed is limited by the slowest card which will be the UHS-II card in slot 2. 

Recording Separately

When utilizing the option “Rec. Separately” you can write a different image type to slot 1 and slot 2.

Our recommended setup is to record the larger RAW or CRAW images to the faster CFexpress Type-B card in slot 1 and the smaller JPEGs to a UHS-II card in slot 2.

With this setup you can write 63 RAW images to slot 1 and 63 JPEG L images to slot 2 before the buffer is full. The buffer will then clear in around 4 seconds.

Writing RAW images to slot 2 and JPEG L to slot 1 would take around 10 seconds to clear the buffer.

Memory Cards for Recording Video

If you plan to shoot 8k or 4k with the higher bitrate settings then you will need a CFexpress Type-B card.

You can still use an SD card for shooting in 8k or 4k but only with lower bitrates or Full-HD, the card will need to meet the speed class shown in the table.

Canon R5 Compatible Memory Cards for Video

In the table above Canon mentions Refer to the Canon website” for further details on the supported CFexpress Type-B cards, here is that link. Unfortunately their list has not been refreshed since July 2020.

The amount of time that you can record for will vary greatly based on the size of memory card that you are using and the video format that you are recording in.

About Our In-Camera Tests

We use manual focus with the ISO set to 100 and a minimum shutter speed of 1/250th which is sufficient to achieve 20 fps with the R5.

High ISO noise reduction is set to standard and we shoot the front cover of a book for consistency with the file sizes.

We always test the maximum continuous shooting speed of the camera which with the R5 is 20 fps when using he Electronic Shutter (Hi+). HEIF images (HDR PQ On) are restricted to the mechanical shutter / elec. first curtain only which reduces the maximum fps to12.

Then we simply time how long it takes to fill the buffer and then clear the buffer. We repeat this 3 times and average out the results. 

You can easily carry out these tests yourself but your results may be slightly different since the file size will vary based on the scene being shot. The number of shots before the buffer is hit can also vary based on your camera settings such as ISO and noise reduction.

Performance can also vary by card capacity so these results are only valid for the sizes tested here.
